It was never going to be an easy game for either of the top ranked teams, but after a lot of missed chances and strong defence, USA had just enough power to break through the No.1's. The Americans' are now headed towards the final match on Sunday in the hope of going home as champions for a third time.
The first half of the match belonged to Germany as they managed to hold the majority of the possession over the ball. German goalkeeper Nadine Angerer also managed to prevent many of USA striker Alex Morgan's on-target shots, maintaining the goalless draw.
USA were disappointed to have finished the first half goalless, especially as there had been very many opportunities for them to put themselves in the lead. But Germany - although also goalless - were pleased as it meant their defence was strong and that Angerer had been working hard to keep the goals out. On the other side of the pitch, USA goalkeeper Hope Solo had a very easy first half as next to no shots went her way.
20 minutes into the second half when a penalty shot presented itself, captain and midfielder Carli Lloyd effortlessly scored the team's first goal of the match, putting them 1-0 up. In the 74th minute defender Kelley O'hara replaced Tobin Heath and with just 6 minutes left in the match, she secured the teams lead with a second goal.
It was a very exciting and tight match with great strengths shown from both sides, but USA were the victorious team. The Americans will go on to play the winner of tonight's semi final - Japan vs England - match in the final game on Sunday.
