This game was the first Women's World Cup match that Ivory Coast have ever partaken, and unfortunately for them they were put against the unstoppable force that is Germany, the top ranked FIFA team.

So, maybe Germany could have taken it a little easy on Ivory Coast for their debut Women's World Cup... But they were not planning on playing fair and, proving the strength of the team, Celia Sasic and Anja Mittag (who appeared to be in excellent form) secured a whopping 5 beautiful goals in the first 35 minutes alone.

Despite this immediate triumph, the German's did have many clear cut chances which they missed - obviously too determined to get goals and not taking time to think them through – which could have put them up to at least 9-0 by 45 minutes had they achieved them. By half time, however, Germany were still up 5-0.

Ivory Coast did not quite have the same strength or speed as the highest ranked team, but they did show off some skills and techniques, occasionally proving they could be a threat to the game. They did have lots of opportunities to score, but consistently lost possession of the ball right at the last minute. Coach Clementine Toure is likely to look at this game as a push forward in the tournament, and an opportunity for them to learn from it.

With more almost-goals and lots of yellow cards for Ivory Coast, Germany did not slow down for one second and they were constantly hungry for more and more goals. Germany made it to double figures, with five more goals in the last 25 minutes of the game leaving Ivory Coast with a devastating loss.

The newbies to the Women's World Cup fought throughout the entire game, although their tremendous loss, but the team ranked 67 just didn't have what it took to keep up with and beat the number one ranked team. Maybe they will have better luck against their fellow newcomers Thailand.
